Iroko

Chlorophora excelsa (West Africa)

Iroko is sometimes referred to as African Teak because of its natural oiliness, brown colour, strength and durability. However it lacks the consistent fine qualities of genuine Teak, having a coarse irregular grain (sometimes interlocking causing tearing on machined surfaces), variable colour and unpredictable stability. Iroko is well suited for external carpentry, terrace decking and some marine work. Internally, its durability and moderate cost make it a choice for kitchen and laboratory worktops but caution is advised if considering it for fine joinery.
